The talk will explore how iconoclastic violence was remembered in Recatholicisation-era Bohemia. Iconoclasm was a prominent feature of the Hussite Revolt and the Thirty Years’ War and in the seventeenth century, Catholic historical accounts written in Bohemia often emphasised attacks on religious objects and images. This paper explores how such accounts contributed to the memorialisation of iconoclastic violence. It examines how the representation of wartime iconoclasm in Catholic texts contributed to the memory of the Thirty Years’ War, which has been remembered as one of the most violent conflicts in early modern Europe, by linking this memory to religious practice and local cults.
Anna-Marie Pípalová is a historian of early modern Central Europe and a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University. She completed her PhD at the University of Cambridge, where her dissertation examined the interplay between scholarship, identity, and politics in seventeenth-century Bohemia. Her research interests include the history of scholarship, early modern historiography, the Marian cult, and the Thirty Years’ War.
